The Automatic Train Control (ATC) system is used in both Sweden and Norway to protect trains
from overspeeding and driving past red signals.
ATC is divided into 2 parts:
- Track equipment
- Train equipment
Track equipment has values that can be variable or constant.
The train equipment listents to the track equipment which then controls the brakes and speed limitations.
Currently the system is in early development.

Before ATC: A Time of Uncertainty
In late 2024, the first railway in our partnered game Skogviken opened, with plans for early expansion.
This system relied on simple trains and basic infrastructure. Signals and speed limits were not enforced by any monitoring system and were instead the responsibility of the driver to observe and follow.
This led to significant uncertainty and many unsafe situations, as drivers could pass signals at danger and violate speed limits without any system in place to stop them.
This solution was simple and direct. Dispatchers were required at stations to control junctions and other track elements, as well as to ensure the safe departure of trains.
In early 2025, the railway was extended and the track system was upgraded to allow for safer operations. In this new system, drivers were given monitoring of current speed limits and signal aspects. This represented a transitional stage between having no monitoring and high uncertainty, and a full ATC system that enforces brake curves and continuous speed supervision.
The ATC system currently under development assists drivers with braking and provides continuous information about permitted speeds. The goal is to develop the ATC to a level that is practically indistinguishable from the real-life systems used in Norway and Sweden.
